Overview

Touro University seeks a dynamic educator, scholar and administrator to serve as the next dean of our Graduate School of Jewish Studies upon the retirement of our long-serving Founding Dean.

 

The Dean is the Chief Academic Officer in charge of academic, administrative, fiscal, and aspirational leadership of the Graduate School of Jewish Studies (GSJS), reporting to the Provost. The Dean is responsible for leading the faculty and staff in the successful planning, implementation, and evaluation of policies and programs that ensure student success and the fulfillment of the GSJS educational, research, and community engagement mission and vision. The Dean represents the GSJS both internally to the University and externally to a diverse range of stakeholders. The Dean leads the faculty and staff in initiatives and strategic planning/implementation to increase the GSJS’s regional, national, and international reputation, and to increase external support for the GSJS. The Dean is responsible for the preparation and implementation of budgetary proposals that will provide adequate resources for the operations and growth of the unit’s programs, student enrollment, research capacity, and services, under consultation with the Provost.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides leadership for major activities of the school such as recruitment, admissions, academic programs, research, community engagement, and alumni engagement
  • Provides strategic leadership on academic program quality, curriculum innovation, academic policies, and assessment and continuous improvement
  • Recruits and assigns faculty
  • Directs the faculty development and evaluation process, including fostering scholarly work among the faculty, the pursuit of research and other grants, and opportunities to improve teaching
  • Assures compliance with all accreditation standards and guidelines established by NYSED, MSCHE and Israel
  • Oversees enrollment management in the various programs of the GSJS
  • Coordinates financial resource development and budget control, and external grant acquisition
  • Effectively cultivates donors and funders
  • Teaches graduate seminars, advises students, and serves as director or member of MA thesis or PhD dissertation committees
  • Serves as director of the PhD program
  • Plans academic conferences
  • Operates as an innovator and problem solver, inspiring and supporting the success of students, faculty, and staff
  • Acts as an ambassador of Touro University to key diverse constituencies and enhances GSJS standing among external peers
  • Prepares the budgetary proposals to assure adequate resources for fulfilling the mission of the GSJS according to the principles of sound academic and administrative management
  • Works to build innovative interdisciplinary and partnership opportunities across and among various entities and educational institutions to further the goals of Touro University, working collaboratively with all of the other Deans as well as the senior academic leadership
  • Assists with career advisement and placement
  • Serves on graduate division and university-wide committees

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • PhD required; strong scholarly credentials expected
  • Significant experience in academic administration at an accredited institution
  • Proven track record as a leader, teacher and public servant

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of higher education regulations and institutional benchmarking
  • Outstanding communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with multiple and varied constituencies
  • Strong customer service and organizational skills
  • Must be able to work simultaneously on several high-priority tasks in a multi-tasking environment
  • Budget preparation
  • Developing and implementing goals, managing resources, strategic planning and interdisciplinary scholarly skills

Maximum Salary

USD $205,000.00/Yr.

Minimum Salary

USD $180,000.00/Yr.
