Overview

Academic Advisement plays a crucial role in the success of GSE students. The primary goal of the position is to support students in pursuing their academic and professional objectives in GSE’s programs. The Graduate Academic Advisor build relationships with students, assist in exploring and comprehending their choices, and tailor their entire

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Understand Policies and Procedures: Familiarity with university and GSE policies and procedures is essential for this role.
  • Provide guidance and support to a diverse student population regarding educational and career goals. Establishing ongoing relationship with panel of assigned students, including, but not limited to, Zoom and/or face to face meetings (minimally, twice a semester). The progression a student to successful degree completion is a major responsibility. The Graduate Academic Advisor is responsible to inform a student in a timely fashion if they have deviated from expected progress on their selected degree program.
  • Major Selection and Changes: Assisting students in selecting or changing majors by offering appropriate guidance.
  • Course Selection and Progress Tracking: Helping students select courses that align with degree requirements and monitoring their progress within the GSE roadmap appropriate for their program.
  • Managing Schedule Changes: Assisting students with course add/drop procedures, as well as discussing implications (academic and financial) of contemplated changes.
  • Academic Resource Support: Facilitating student access to tutorial services and other academic resources. Assisting faculty who identify students with academic or personal issues interfering with satisfactory academic achievement to refer students for assistance with identified issues.
  • Facilitation and Coordination: Serving as a liaison between Chairs, faculty, and various administrative offices such as the Registrar’s Office, Admissions, Bursar, and Financial Aid, under the supervision of the Senior Director for Graduate Advisement or designee.
  • Transfer Credits and Substitutions: Prompt evaluating of transfer course credits and the managing course substitution processes.
  • Student Record Management: Monitoring and updating student records to ensure accuracy.
  • Assisting with Academic Challenges: Supporting students facing academic challenges by presenting their cases to the Senior Director for Graduate Advisement.
  • Graduation Check: Completing graduation checks using tools like Degree Works to ensure students meet graduation requirements.
  • Student Service Orientation: participate in virtual and in-person orientations and assist students in dealing with other Student Services offices (bursar, registrar, and financial aid). When referral is needed, make sure to personally set up the next steps, and follow up after completed.
  • At the discretion of the Senior Director for Graduate Advisement, the GSE Graduate Advisor may be asked to work extended hours or visit and recruit at outside locations. These requirements collectively involve guiding students through their academic journey, ensuring compliance with university and GSE standards, and serving as a vital link between students, faculty, and administrative entities.
  • Counselors create rapport with students using interpersonal techniques such as active listening, expressions of empathy, demonstrating positive regard and empowerment, providing clear and accurate information, using questioning, challenging, and reflecting techniques, etc. Same day responses to student emails are expected. Emails arriving within 15 minutes of the end of the workday may be responded to early on the next business day.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/ Experience

  • Master’s degree required.
  • Proven experience in student recruitment and advising within an educational institution or a similar type of institution.

Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities

  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly Customer Relationship Manager systems, DegreeWorks, Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, & Bookings), Zoom technology and other technological tools as assigned.
  • Documentation of daily activities
  • Ability to develop in-depth knowledge of program and certification requirements for all programs at GSE. .
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, multicultural environment

Travel

  • Possible temporary coverage at various Touro locations as needed

Maximum Salary

USD $54,000.00/Yr.

Minimum Salary

USD $43,200.00/Yr.
