Overview

Directly reporting to the Director of Clinical Education, the Clinical Practice Leader (CPL) at Touro College of Dental Medicine’s clinical site in Albuquerque, New Mexico is responsible for overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of assigned specialty clinic(s). Clinical Practice Leaders also ensure appropriate coverage, administrative support and resolution of any issues within the clinic(s) they oversee.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Initiating and guiding student doctor/patient interaction and assist in transition to clinical practice.
  2. In the case of community practices, continually reviewing student rosters.
  3. Delegating patient assignments or redistributing to student doctors based on needs within the clinical environment for which they are responsible.
  4. Providing guidance and direction regarding care of patients by monitoring student treatment planning, progress, and performance.
  5. Modeling and advising students on professionalism and patient management techniques
  6. Assisting with solving patient related problems.
  7. Reviewing within their clinical practice, on a regular basis, where appropriate, each student’s performance related to:
    • Quality and Quantity of clinical care.
    • Each student’s practice and patient resources.
    • Each student’s individual roster and group progress.
    • Each student’s patient treatment goals.
    • Individual student needs and related time utilization.
  8. Monitoring unapproved notes and treatments on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, and signed by each CPL
  9. Reporting instances of misconduct to the Director of Clinical Education
  10. Ensuring adequate clinical coverage by approving faculty time away in all clinical practices.
  11. Ensuring calibration of clinical faculty in:
    • Clinical protocol compliance.
    • Infection Control Compliance
  12. Completing Reviews of student activity as required.
  13. Overseeing Clinical Formative and Summative Examination Process which includes reviewing progress of students on the Road to Competency.
  14. Attending periodic meetings with other CPL’s.
  15. Membership, if appointed, on the Clinical Policy Committee.
  16. Membership on the Year 3,4 Student Academic Promotion Review Committee (SAPRC 3-4)

Qualifications

Education/ Experience

  • Required qualifications include a D.D.S./DMD from a CODA-accredited dental school or equivalent, Certificate of training from an ADA-accredited AEGD or GPR program, and/or other advanced degrees and previous teaching experience.
  • The applicant must be eligible for licensure in the state of New Mexico.
  • A track record of scholarly activity and outstanding patient care is highly desirable, as well as demonstration of or likely commitment to diversity-related teaching/research/service.

Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities

  • Engagement and familiarity in curriculum development and digital dentistry technology and experience in faculty calibration is desirable but not required
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain and uphold an educational/clinical environment that promotes collegiality and collaboration.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and high ethical standards in a health science educational setting is essential.
