Overview

The Assistant Director of Clinical IT Systems is a leadership role responsible for overseeing and supporting the Touro College of Dental Medicine- TCDM clinical information systems, including the axiUm dental management platform, patient care support, clinical education, and operational efficiency. Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Clinical Systems, this role requires leadership, operational oversight, and technical expertise to manage, enhance, and align clinical systems with the university and clinical mission.The Assistant Director will act as a pivotal liaison between TCDM New York campus, clinical faculty, administrators, IT, and vendors to ensure effective configuration, compliance, and optimization of clinical technology. This individual is also responsible for developing policies, managing security, training staff, and fostering innovation to meet evolving academic and healthcare standards.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Leadership
    • Develop and execute a clinical technology strategy that aligns with the university's mission and operational goals.
    • Collaborate with senior TCDM leadership, including the CIO and department chairs, to enhance system functionality and integration.
    • Evaluate and collaborate on new technologies to improve clinical workflows and patient care axiUm
  • Administration and Management
    • Oversee the implementation of the axiUm system to support clinical workflows and the patient journey.
    • Manage user access, security settings, and system configurations, ensuring compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.
    • Provide direction for the integration of axiUm with other clinical, educational, and administrative systems.
    • Ensure system continuity of the axiUm in support of the Executive Director of Clinical Operations
  • Operational Oversight
    • Manage the daily operations of the clinical technology environment, ensuring high availability and functionality.
    • Assist and contribute to the development of workflows and policies to streamline operations across clinical departments.
    • Assist and contribute to continual service improvements patient intake, scheduling, billing, and data reporting processes.
    • Developing and maintaining a thorough understanding of all aspects of clinical computing systems.
  • Staff Training and Development
    • Train and mentor faculty, clinic managers, and staff on axiUm and other clinical technologies.
    • Organize professional development opportunities, including attendance at industry conferences (e.g., Henry Schein One Summit) to stay updated on best practices and innovations.
    • Supervise and evaluate staff performance, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation.
  • Quality Assurance and Compliance
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, local regulations, and University policy, including HIPAA and other relevant standards.
    • Collaborate with quality improvement teams to develop and track performance metrics for clinical systems.
    • Respond to system audits and resolve security issues promptly.
    • Policies evaluation and exercising sound judgment in their interpretation and implementation
  • Collaboration and Communication
    • Serve as a point of contact for clinical systems inquiries from faculty, staff, and students.
    • Foster relationships with vendors and industry partners to stay current on new features.
    • Communicate system updates and policies effectively across all TCDM stakeholders.

Qualifications

Education/ Experience

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is required, with a Master's Degree preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressively responsible experience managing clinical informationtechnology with substantial managerial experience in a healthcare or academic setting required.
  • 3+ years of experience in healthcare IT management, preferably in academic environments preferred.
  • Proven ability to execute technology strategies that meet organizational objectives.
  • Certifications in areas such as Data Science, or Healthcare IT, desired.

Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities

  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and facilitate effective cross-functional collaboration.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including team management and staff development.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of IT disciplines, regulatory compliance, and academic healthcare operations.
  • Strong understanding of clinical workflows, patient journeys, and healthcare systems; familiarity with axiUm or other electronic records management software preferred.
  • Familiarity with current and emerging healthcare technologies.
  • Experience integrating clinical systems with electronic health records (EHRs) and other platforms preferred.
  • Experience with Oracle Database required; Knowledge of Virtualization, a plus.

Travel

  • Occasional travel to attend industry events and vendor meetings.

Physical Demands

  • Duties are performed in an office and clinical environment, requiring frequent contact with employees, patients, and external partners.
  • Ability to lift documents and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.
