Overview

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager for Touro College of Dental Medicine’s clinic site in Albuquerque, New Mexico will monitor clinic safety, laboratory safety, environmental and regulatory compliance, and industrial hygiene and will advise on and enforce clinic-wide regulatory requirements and best management practices. Specifically, the EHS Manager supports compliance with environmental health and safety management programs including chemical and biological safety, hazardous waste management, and applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) life safety requirements. This position will also assist in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and complete required EHS inspections and recordkeeping as necessary. Lastly, the EHS Manager assists with training faculty, students, and staff on clinic safety and provides oversight of the clinic’s Chemical Environmental Management System (CEMS) program Safety Data Sheet (SDS) management, Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP program), Infection Prevention program, testing of potable water systems in the clinics, air sampling for nitrous oxide/dust, lead the Emergency Response Team, conduct safety and infection prevention inspections, and all other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules and performs routine audits of clinic activities and facilities
  • Maintains comprehensive and accurate records of inspections, consults with instructors and staff on inspection findings, and provides appropriate recommendations based on regulatory compliance and best-practice guidelines.
  • Assist clinics in performing risk assessments and make recommendations on appropriate lab safety practices.
  • Assists with the management of regulated waste streams (chemical, biological, radiological, universal).
  • Assists with infection control and other compliance programs for Touro Dental Health.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and other safety issues that may arise.
  • Conducts facility safety & environmental compliance audits; produces audit reports.
  • Monitors and documents the progress of corrective actions.
  • Maintains records/documentation/databases including training records, waste manifests, Safety Data Sheets, safety equipment certifications, and other regulatory compliance documents.
  • Conducts trainings on a variety of safety/compliance and emergency response topics including CPR/AED.
  • Maintain strong collaborative and professional relationships while actively promoting a safety culture.
  • Provide emergency response program support.
  • Develops and implements a contractor safety program and audits compliance.
  • Collaborates with the facilities department to ensure projects, construction and other work is completed safety and in compliance with state, local and federal regulations.
  • Trains facilities and other support departments in relevant OSHA requirements, such as fire safety, waste storage, electrical safety and lock out / tag out.
  • Ensures all safety, environmental, fire systems are in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Files reports/permits with regulatory agencies as needed.
  • Manage dental x ray inspection program and certifications, if required.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/ Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required, concentration in science, engineering, environmental science, industrial hygiene, or related field preferred. CSP/ASP preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience in an academic, scientific, or healthcare setting.
  • Experience performing audits/recognizing hazards and preparing technical reports highly preferred.
  • Teaching experience or experience presenting technical topics highly desirable.

Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities

  • Customer service and team orientated.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook.
  • Excellent organizational interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral).
  • Must be self-motivated with an outstanding ability to take initiative
  • Ability to prioritize & manage projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work within laboratories and other areas containing chemicals biohazards.

Travel

  • This position is 100% on-site, remote or hybrid work is not available for this position.
